How to grow Ipomoea lobata (Spanish Flag)

Ipomoea lobata is commonly known as Spanish Flag and also Mina lobata and firecracker vine. It is a fast growing climber that can reach heights of 5m but in the UK 2m in height is the norm at the end of the summer from seed. It can be overwintered as long as the temperature is kept above 10C but in the UK it grows quick enough for most growers to treat it as an annual The flowers grow on racemes and appear in late summer.

How to propagate

Sow your fresh seeds in spring. The seeds should be soaked for 24 hours before planting 5mm deep in potting compost. The seeds should be kept at 25C for two weeks when signs of germination should appear. Plant outdoors when all chance of frost has gone.
