Some types of bamboo like to spread themselves around the garden. They do this by sending out runners . The good thing about these runners is that bamboo sends them out from quite high on the plant, near or along the surface. These can easily be stopped by putting in place a physical barrier to the runners. For big clumps you can use a root barrier and this can be bought from specialist suppliers. For smaller clumps it is an idea to just bury a pot and plant them in that.
If you have a heavy or clay soil then it is a good idea to cut off the bottom of the pot to allow for drainage. As long as the pot is over eighteen inches deep and you plant the bamboo high ijn the pot then the runners should not go underneath.
