Why are my banana leaves going yellow?

Musa Basjoo are famous for their wonderful paddle leaves so when those leaves start turning yellow it is a cause for concern. Although bananas like to be well watered they also don’t like sitting with their roots in waterlogged soil. Good drainage is essential so gardeners with a heavy clay soil need to add in some grit along with their compost when planting. Failure to keep those roots free draining can lead to root rot which will eventually kill the plant.

Another cause of yellowing leaves is lack of nutrients. Yellowing around the edge of the leaf could indicate a lack of potassium whereas ‘striping’ could mean a lack of iron or manganese. If the leaf is yellow all over then Nitrogen is the most likely nutrient missing.
